The design studio has had the good fortune to work with wonderful people who have helped shape the projects we have worked on together. Here is what they have to say:
-
Thank you for designing us this beautiful house. Daily we are struck by its view lines, features, light and comfort, and we have barely moved in. We look forward to making our life and our home here for decades to come. You have given us a lovely place: tangible, sturdy and unique.

James Burde is a privilege to work with - he is thoughtful and passionate; he is a great listener; and he tests anything that he has questions about through models and drawings in a way that helps him, the contractor and his clients in equal measure. He makes sure everyone has the information they need for moving forward which makes the process easy and a pleasure for all. We could not recommend him more enthusiastically.
The house is a constant surprise — it's light and airy but also cosy and intimate — the beauty is in the simple but consistent detailing that comes from an intimate understanding of construction and materials

It is without hesitation that we would recommend James Burde and Teiki Design Studio. From the beginning of the design phase, we were blown away with how James thoughtfully created a structure out of a bubble diagram that my wife and I created. The entire process, from design to finish, has surpassed our expectations, including design, construction costs, energy efficiency, and James's attention to detail. In the end we have a warm, beautiful home that exceeds our evolving needs of raising a family.

We began our project with James by asking him to design a house in a village setting. We wanted a house that was traditional in look and feel with contemporary amenities and energy efficient elements. The final result is a home with an inviting, open space. He designed private spaces — a master bedroom and office — off of the open first floor. There is a wonderful sun porch where we spend summer evenings. We appreciated working with James as he shared his ideas and worked to incorporate all of the elements we desired. With the energy efficient features and the layout of the house we anticipate aging in place here for many years.

Working with James was one of the best moves we made when we decided to build our house. From the earliest conceptual models to moving day, James was a core part of the team that made our home possible. His relaxed style, deep sense of design, and ability to translate our ideas into reality put us at ease throughout the complex construction process.
Today, five years after completion, our house and its underlying design continue to amaze us. Our favorite features are many, but topping the list are the natural light and views, quality of materials, superior energy efficiency, and overall hominess. James's original design lies at the root of all of these features and our family looks forward to many more years of enjoying them.

Working with James on the island house gave us the opportunity to share with him the relationship we had developed with the land, the water, and the ongoing dialogue between them that defines the islands in Lake Champlain. James spent hours just getting to know us, and we spent ample time together at the property — walking it, staking off potential building sites, evaluating trees and other features of the land, and developing an intimacy with the island. Through this understanding he was able to capture our ideas imaginatively and authentically. Together we three were able to build a common understanding of how the house should become a part of the landscape. It was easy to explore alternatives with James before ultimately arriving at a design that encompassed what we feel represents our place with the island.

James first came to our house site to absorb the surroundings. He was very big on it "fitting in" (high on our list too). He then built a mini-model which gave us an idea of what he had in mind for shape… then it was on to a working model - it blew us away! It showed in great detail what James had in mind for us and gave us an amazing visual representation to think about and discuss. We ended up making very few changes to what he proposed, it was THAT good! Then came the plans with all the detail that you would expect from a good Architect.
James was involved in problem solving all along the way, and always made himself available to us for questions. He made weekly (and sometimes bi-weekly) site visits and made sure he was on site at all critical junctures. He worked well with us and with the builder and the subs. He listened, analyzed, and proposed plans/solutions for issues that arose.
James did a great job of listening to our desires and needs and "how we live" and then designing to meet all of those parameters. The great thing about our house is that it is ALL very livable. There is no wasted space and no uncomfortable space.
